Establishing the reason why a specific geographical area is considered a homeland of two different tribes in Murdock and GREG is not always straightforward. We initially collect information from three main sources: (i) Wikipedia, (ii) eHRAF World Cultures , and (iii) country-specific books. Then, we manually check all the collected information and classified in the following categories:

  • Cohabitation/No Replacement: It refers to those cases where either the new group were in cohabitation before or it became a cohabitant during this year.
  • Violent Displacement: It refers to those cases where a violent displacement for the new group. In this cases, the former group were completely displaced
  • Colonization: In these cases the new group were colonized (violently or not) by the new group.
  • Non-Violent Replacement: In those cases, the former group took control of the territory, yet no evidence of violence event was found.
  • Not Enough Information: In those cases, we don’t have enough information to be classified in any of the formers categories.

Based on a case by case analysis, we are establishing some reasons. In some cases, the Murdock tribe was killed/displaced by current GREG tribe (2 % of total geographical area). Nonetheless, the vast majority of the intersection that are classified as different remain without a clear reason (21% of the total geographical area) as collected information is not enough to establish a clear reason.
